Experimental side
Flipeadóirí Longfoirt met Clonguish last Saturday in the ACL league in Newtown on a bitter windy evening. Slashers experimented with an altered formation and gave an opportunity to younger players to shine. Slashers opened well, aided by the wind and strong running by the mid-field and forwards to go three points ahead in the first half. Clonguish went in a point ahead at half time. Colm Farrell was delivering good ball to the forwards, wind assisted and mid-field pairing of Andrew Dalton and Barry Gilleran were linking well with the forwards. Scoring was provided by Colin Smith and Niall Kelly (1) in a tightly contested half.
“In aghaidh na gaoithe” was certainly the case for Slashers in the 2nd half and Clonguish took every advantage by taking the lead further. Despite creating many good attacks Slashers were not registering often enough on the score board and eventually Clonguish ran out winners by three points. Niall Mulligan and Trevor Clendenning worked hard and Shane Rodgers took his chance when introduced and continues to grow into a senior player. This was a good preparation game for championship pace football later in the year. Next outing is at home V Carrickedmond on 15 April @ 8.30pm.
