Longford 0-10       Cavan 1-09 Longford fell to their third defeat of the league campaign as neighbours Cavan gained promotion to Division 2 of the football league courtesy of a 2 point win in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. But for poor shooting and fantastic goalkeeping from Longford netminder Paddy Collum the scoreline could’ve been a lot wider. The decisive score was a penalty which Martin Dunne dispatched in the 45^th minute Barely one minute had elapsed when Longford were dealt a big blow with Mark Hughes being black carded. While waiting for his replacement to come on Cavan went down the field and Kevin Tierney pointed. Although Cavan dominated proceedings the sides were level four times in the opening half with Longford going in at the break two points in front; 0-06 to 0-04. The gap was cut to one point in the 36^th minute before Cavan hit a number of wides. In the 41^st minute they were reduced to 14 men when Turloc Mooney received a 2^nd yellow card. One minute later Sean McCormack should’ve had a free when he was fouled but the decision went the other way. Cavan broke and from a rather harsh free they were awarded a penalty which Dunne coolly put away. Longford were down to 14 in the 49^th when Colm P Smyth received a straight red. It was all go and one minute later Cavan’s Tierney was black carded. With it being an even playing field now Cavan began to turn the screw. Three points in a row put Cavan five up in the 54^th minute. McCormack replied for Longford before Niall McDermott restored their five point advantage. Longford staged a late rally but they couldn’t get the goal they needed to get something out of the game.
