Slashers bow out
The Senior team ended the 2014 competitive year on 4 Oct in Ml Fay Park when they lost to St Mary's Granard 1-11 to 3-6. Slashers played some good football on the night with 12 scores against St Mary's 9 scores but for all the possession the team did not penetrate sufficiently to gain victory.
St Mary's had the dream start with 2 early goals. These goals came so early in the game that the effect was less significant especially as Slashers gained the upper hand as the game progressed. The backs were solidly keeping the team in the game and when Andrew Dalton weaved past a number of backs and slotted a goal in the first half it looked like game on.
St Mary's scored the first point of the 2nd half and now it was an evenly contested match with both teams level mid way through the 2nd half. Dermot Brady was doing great work moving the ball into the forwards but scores were difficult to take because of intense Granard back play. Sean Flynn came on and saw plenty of play and moving towards the last quarter Slashers reached a one point lead and this was increased to 2pts in the final minutes. It looked game over at that point and the team adopted a keep ball style running down the clock. In the final minute a ball into the Slashers back line that was not cleared ended up in the net giving St Marys the one point lead with not enough time to react. Game over, season over.
