The last week was a big week for the Slashers Hurling Club. After the fiasco of the appointed referee failing to show for the Feile Final our boys pulled off a major shock in the refixture by capturing the title for the first time since 2011 in a game that had everything. We thought we had done enough until Liam Browne scored a goal from a rasper of a shot to put Wolfe Tones in front by the minimum with just a couple of minutes remaining. However, there was still time left for one more chance and Zach Tunstead's half-blocked shot somehow crept inside the post and over the line to send Slashers' hearts into seventh heaven. All credit to both teams for a fantastic spectacle and to the clubs, players, mentors and families who do so much to keep hurling alive in the county. We now look forward to participating in the National Feile na nGael being held in June in Kilkenny/Wexford/Carlow where our host club will be St. Mullin's of Carlow.
On Monday our U8s & U9s had the honour of gracing the hallowed turf of our National Stadium, Croke Park. They gave a fantastic account of themselves and hopefully it'll be a day they will long remember. Thanks to all who traveled & in particular to Carol Murray for the lovely food and refreshments provided.
Our seniors got their competitive start to the season with an away fixture against Oran in the Roscommon Senior Hurling League. Having played some scintillating hurling in the first half we found ourselves five points up at halftime. Unfortunately, we couldn't sustain the effort into the second half as the county champions got their act together and finished the game stronger. Final score: 1-14 Oran 2-08 Slashers
Deepest sympathies to the Leonard family on the death of Frank Leonard, Mullinalaghta. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
