Hurling Finals Day in Pearse Park on Saturday ended in heartbreak for our seniors and U16s who were competing for county honours. However, all was not lost as our U11s began the day with a tremendous victory in their final with a goal in the last minute to win by a point. They battled until the very end and never gave up when it looked as if the match had gone from us. Well done to both sets of players and managements in what was a riveting contest from start to finish. Final score: Slashers 3-2 Wolfe Tones 3-1
That was as good as it got for us, though. Our juveniles were minus two of our strongest players through injury and we knew we were on a hiding to nothing against a talented Wolfe Tones side. However, on the day we had twenty players togged out and the final scoreline didn't truly reflect their efforts.
The early stages of the Senior Final were nip and tuck and we seemed to be settling in well when Cian Kavanagh's rasper of a shot rebounded off the crossbar. Wolfe Tones followed up with two goals at the other end before half time which were real hammer blows. We needed a good start to the second half but it didn't come and the game drifted away from us. Hopefully this loss will prove to be a stepping stone for the team for the future, seven of whom are minors experiencing their first senior final. Well done & hard luck to our teams....everyone did their best. Beidh lá eile againn.
Scant consolation after Saturday but we've qualified for another Leitrim League Final by beating Gortletteragh comprehensively on Tuesday night. Well done to all. It would be great to finish up the year by retaining that trophy. We also have outstanding minor championship matches in Westmeath and in Longford and we would hope to claim some silverware at this level.
